I still remember being knocked down seeing the edited video on MTV and then being shocked by (i think) @QMagazine which gave the album a 3/10 and claimed that the Diamond Sea goes on like a malfunctioning chainsaw...or sonething like that... I do believe i stopped reading the magazine from then on...
Washing Machine is an under-appreciated LP, yet one of my favourite, because (like its follower A Thousand Leaves) it embraces melody more than the early 90s output, the song are longer, like mini-symphonies that yet don't turn into mere prog-ish noodling (well, to my ears they don't, maybe some people were nostalgic for the pop-ishness of Goo and Experimental Jet Set).
