Hey! We're on the same Afro - groove, @SheRa ! Great minds, eh?.....I just LOVE that girl's big afro hair on the cover....like a giant sponge....I have this overpowering urge to ever-so-gently pat it with both my hands! HaHa!!

Awesome. Song added to my old school funk playlist and album saved for later listening. @debutch You can pat your own hair with help from the right product! http://www.voicesofeastanglia.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Afro-Sheen.jpg. I'm Jewish and get a formidable "jewfro" if I grow my hair out, so I don't need the help. :)

@shiningsun2k Glad you enjoyed it! I also gave our buddy butchie a couple of links to check out regarding patting a fro...I think we should bring back the fro, even though for some it has never left (Those that can do it) the rest can where their hair natural No perms, no dyes, no treatments - Just our real hair! If only for a little while...Rock that Funky Jewfro brother! Be Proud! woo!

That looks fantastic! It even has as couple actors from Veronica Mars, an addicting show if ever there was one. I'm definitely going to watch it. And I do rock the jewfro from time to time - it's starting to approach it now as a mater of fact. I even rocked the frohawk just for fun one summer five or six years ago. I bumped into my mom on lunch break and she said "I hoped you'd cut that off before the family reunion this weekend!" which I found hilarious 'cause NOTHING embarrasses her. :D

Haha I know, but it was pretty ridiculous, especially when I went swimming or got it wet and it looked like there was a giant drowned rat on my head, but I liked it and it seemed to impress teenagers since they kept complimenting me on it. :)

@SheRa I haven't seen it yet, no. The title is LOLS! I've heard mixed reviews but I like the concept. I don't think it got a wide release here in Canada, it might have played in a couple of cities. Definitely not in Ottawa, though. Who knows...maybe it did play here briefly. It'll be on Netflix soon enough.

@debutch I'm don't where you live, David, but black hair is degraded a lot in many parts of the world. I don't really know why exactly. I assume because it's just different to most other ethnicities and there's still a lot of prevailing racism. Wanting to pat it or touch it is a form of otherizing it when it's just hair like anyone else's. It just naturally grows in an afro and it's actually pretty ordinary. I know you don't mean anything by it

5 years, 11 months ago

maksuud

@debutch ... and you just think it's cool but the act of touching our hair triggers a lot of ugly history. White people put us in circuses as monkeys and hair touching was part of the act. The act of touching our hair seems pretty flippant but we're taught from a young age that something is wrong with it when really there's just something very wrong with white supremacy. I hope you can understand that.

@debutch and we still gotta go through crap like this to this day http://youtu.be/Rb6ra5aCpQ4

@maksuud I thank you sincerely for taking the time to express your feelings to me , Mak. First of all, I would like to apologise to you deeply if any offence was taken from my remarks. They were, I admit, a little 'flippant' but they were not intended to have any sinister, patronising or demeaning intentions. The truth is ( and this IS the truth..) that my remarks were guided , 100% , by admiration for the 'aesthetics' of the afro but for nothing else "relating" to it....

5 years, 11 months ago

debutch

@maksuud The thing is you see, that I have not seen a full afro hairstyle like that for about 20 years and although you may say it's just ordinary, well, I can't help the way I feel. I simply think it's beautiful to look at! As for my 'touching' remark, well, that WAS 'tongue-in-cheek'...an expression of desire within my mind but something I would NEVER actually do. It would be an insult & insensitive if I tried to do something like that.

@maksuud I was fascinated by the history for this kind of thing and I can understand now how feelings run so deeply. I was not really aware of any of this at all and you put this across to me so eloquently.

@maksuud Thank you for allowing me to have my say, Mak. Love to you. xx

@debutch @maksuud I have found yet another reason to love and appreciate TIMJ. We share not only music and our appreciation for it, but also our reactions to situations, and events that take place in our own backyard. We are from all over the world and we listen to each other, something that is unique and important. I am glad that I have met the both of you, I am glad to have heard this conversation and the genuine respect for someone's humanity that came across with each line.

5 years, 11 months ago

SheRa

@debutch @maksuud I know the both of you as kind people who are funny as hell - and you also have excellent taste in music . I feel privileged to follow you and have you follow me...Have a fab weekend Mwah!

5 years, 11 months ago

debutch

@SheRa. Aww, thank you & God bless both of you @maksuud ... You know what this means, don't you?....another "group hug"? :-)

5 years, 11 months ago

maksuud

@debutch by ordinary, I meant that the afro (or something close to it) is the natural form our hair takes when we haven't gotten a haircut in a minute. David, the kinds of declarations you make aren't ones I'm used to hearing when they're not coming from the viewpoint of fetishization. If it's genuine for you - and it ardently appears so - then of course there's nothing wrong with it. It's still a crime to be black much of the time ...

5 years, 11 months ago

maksuud

@debutch ... And dismantling the white power structures that account for that reality often take the form of confronting day to day aggressions like hair touching. You mightn't know, perhaps, tbe hair it behind referring to a black person as articulate or eloquent. Yes, it runs very deep but you see, David, so does the hate. Your apology is very appreciated. I hope you can spread the knowledge you gain.

5 years, 11 months ago

maksuud

*that referring to a black person as articulate or eloquent can be quite charged.

5 years, 11 months ago

@SheRa @debutch hank you for your very sweet words and I feel just the same! I really do appreciate how receptive you've been. Hug on!

5 years, 11 months ago

debutch

@maksuud ... My final comment...Love and enormous respect to you, Mak. I am probably old enough to be your father yet you have still taught me something full of profundity and wisdom that I will never forget. If there were many more people in the world with your diplomacy , tact and patience, then the world's problems of race & ethnicity would disappear almost overnight . Again, Love and best wishes to you...Dave xx
