Perfection. As you say, the beautiful scraps he left behind do make you wonder what he might have achieved on a grander scale, but his settings of Housman couldn't be more affecting.
@pez Quite. His medals for gallantry under fire are no recompense for the denial to humanity of his talent, stealing from us the two score years so poignantly calculated in the lyrics.
