Whenever I hear this I think of my youth in Irish country pubs, after hours, the curtains drawn and a sing-along with the regulars -- 'cause everyone knew the lyrics. These kinda country pop songs were what the drunks sang.
"I never promised you a rose garden" was a constant refrain from my parents. Haven't heard this in a long time.
Like it, it sounds very Jimmy Webb-ish!
