I first noticed you on TIMJ when you jammed Steely Dan but you haven't jammed them for a while. Looking back at popular music during my life, the Dan is my favorite band after The Beatles. I'm with you that The Royal Scam is my favorite album by Donald and Walter.
@Sylvestrian Picking a favourite Steely Dan album is very hard. Katy Lied and Gaucho are also up there and Aja, of course. I would ask to keep the Royal Scam though if could only pick one. I love Two Against Nature as well. So glad they got a Grammy for that later on in their careers. I didn't discover them until I was about 19 but jeez, I'm glad I did. I heard somewhere that Aja is Paul McCartney's favourite album...Thank you for all the wonderful comments you send, I really appreciate them.
Plenty of folks choose Aja as the best Dan album and one can make a good case for it. You might enjoy this remake (not merely covers) of the complete Aja album by The Darcys, a young Canadian band who do mostly original material: http://arts-crafts.ca/releases_spotlight.php?search=AC066&artist;=The%20Darcys You can listen to it online but I think a download of the full album is still free.
@tomdwilly No, please do! I'm having a 'heated debate' with my brother - a big Dan fan - he likes Countdown to Ecstacy best too. When all the output is excellent how do you pick?
@Sylvestrian Wow, what intriguing interpretations! Really put a different spin on the Aja songs. For me, their interpretation of Home at Last is the stand out track. Thank you for that. :-)
@VickyMB1970 I can't imagine life without em either! Re fave album discussion here: I think it changes over time, and that's how it should be. For me it's AJa v Royal Scam, the latter *just* wins. But what an embarrassment of riches, really!
I'm so glad you enjoyed The Darcys' version of Aja. The songs are so different from the originals that it's a little bit of a jolt at first but I'm happy to report that the reworked songs hold up well after repeated listenings.
@VickyMB1970@Sylvestrian That Darcys cover album is really unique. One thing I loved about it was that it held true to the source material, but wasn't afraid to push in its own direction. I thought Deacon Blues and Peg were fantastic interpretations.
@VickyMB1970 The Royal Scam is without doubt a top contender. Kid Charlemagne followed by The Caves of Altamira and Don't Take Me Alive are probably the best 1-2-3 punch an album could give you. And it keeps going strong even after that. Yeah, I'd say The Royal Scam or Countdown To Ecstasy, hands down.
@duncan_idaho@ErnieBilko@gillmaxwell So good to know what your favourites/current favourites are. One thing we can all agree on; Steely Dan are great! :-)
Watching American Hustle tonight I'm reminded to go back to the earlier Dan albums. But I'd still have to say all things considered, The Royal Scam is my absolute favourite. But wait....;-0

This album's a personal favourite and it helps that this track kicks it off something fierce. Fantastic!

@gillmaxwell That's a source of pride, no eeek necessary!! I cannot imagine my life without their music; thankfully I don't have to! :-)

@duncan_idaho I agree. I have thought long and hard about this over the years and I think The Royal Scam is my favourite Steely Dan album.

Fully with you on The Dan Worship although would have to put my two pence in for Countdown to Ecstasy as their best album. Flawless.

Love all their albums but it has to be 'Countdown...' and 'Can't Buy A Thrill' for me...
