Sonata I.X.1905 by Leoš Janáček

“Achingly sad. This was written for a worker who was bayoneted and killed for the crime of demonstrating in support for a Czech university in Brno. Not satisfied with it, Janáček threw the manuscript in the river, "And it floated along on the water that day, like white swans". Luckily,18 years later, the pianist who had premiered it remembered that she had a copy.”
