i remember most unplugged episodes to be pretty contrived affairs with the mtv darlings du jour. i'm not surprised that kurt had to fight with the producers to perform his choices. but oh so worth it. what a performance.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit when I was in 8th or 9th grade, immediately turning me off to Nirvana because it was so big and I just couldn't relate with the dull, dismal vibe of the video. It slowly grew on me though and then "Come As You Are" and "Lithium" blew me away, forcing me to turn go turn my initial impression around. I still wasn't a huge fan though and didn't care for the Unplugged stuff, again, because of the dull, dreary somber vibe. Fast forward to recent years and I LOVE it.
Oh and I wasn't even aware any of those were covers until years later either. I love all three though and got to see the Meat Puppets perform their original version of "Lake of Fire" in concert a couple years ago. Funny how much the drabness of performers turned me off back then. My favorite band was STP and I was even turned off to their Unplugged because of it. But what a performance. '90s Grunge and MTV Unplugged were made for each other.
Sorry to say, that once again Nirvana were another band that passed me by. :-( Probably mainly due to combination of heavy work loads and lack of money around this time! And of course no interweb! So, I can sense a whole load of homework coming my way....bring it on!! This is a mighty Jam.
@mikelowe you would best served starting that homework, still waiting for a report back on Sia. Nevermind is a great start, but you have to listen to "Nirvana unplugged" Best live album ever..period :)

Always amazing. I spent a good part of my mid-teens trying to shout along to the last verse of this.

Same problem with the man who sold the world. Seems that Nirvana is hard to jam! Great cover(s)!!!!
