The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra

“My Dad liked Bing Crosby and hated Frank Sinatra, so, naturally, I started listening to Sinatra. Always the rebel huh. Thing is, I like a lot of Sinatra's stuff. It amazes me that he knows when to start singing, how he pushes against the time, how the arrangements are madness - and he pulls it all together into a song. Try imagining Frank is erased - the music alone makes no sense! The key changes are crazy too - he's perfect on the first time he sings "touches my foolish heart"; he hits the ending note, Bb, perfectly - genius. My Dad, rest his soul, used to snort it was all tricks and wizardry with Frank, he preferred straightforward, proper, honest, singing without unnecessaryness. I have become that, only the bar has changed, I'm comparing Frankie with today's over-egged styles, maximum melisma, and no honesty. Pah!”
