I always think of this song hand in hand with another rockin' R&B song from about the same time, En Vogue's "Free Your Mind". Now I'm all nostalgic for the early '90s...
It was that time when everyone (eg rekkid companiz) were scrambling for that crossover hit. Guitar hero era meets RnB pop. Funny to look back now on what a little tweak to the formula was considered radical.
I too never knew or had forgotten it was Vernon, but once heard as him, pretty much hard to hear anything else about the song imho : )
