1965 & Dylan is halfway through his masterpiece, "Highway 61 re-visited". After recording two classic epics, "Desolation Row" & "Like a rolling stone", he was about to create a third one called "Hurricane" making this album untouchable as the greatest ever release by anyone so far....Dylan had just heard about Ruben " Hurricane" Carter, the top boxer, who had been framed & wrongly imprisoned for murder & he decided to write his first "protest song" in over a year.
The atmosphere was electric in the studio. There was ANGER, AGRESSION. A crackling tension at the injustice of it all & an amphetamine-fuelled energy felt by the band one & all, in particular, keyboard maestro Al Kooper, playing like a man possessed where some say they even saw steam visibly coming off his organ...( oo-err )....
....BUT OF COURSE, if Dylan HAD recorded this in '65, then the whole sorry saga of Hurricane Carter would have had to have happened 10 years earlier TOO,...which means tampering with history, time, space & destiny, which would probably have resulted in the Universe collapsing or something....so it's just as well that he DIDN'T make that song then, now isn't it? :-)
....I think that @Bukowski & @adrian4acn probably love this song of Dylans' from his "Desire" Lp, so I wonder what they think of this faster version?....
I think I have the Milltown Brothers album somewhere. I saw in Kentish Town I think, they were all over GLR once upon a time. I like Dylan covers and this is a fine effort. Jam Fantasies hey? Like the Jim Morrison Isn't Dead Come Back Tour.....
@Sid_Bonkers Well, I hear what you're saying in the sense that it's VERY faithful to the original but I do believe that they put their stamp on it with the organ , making it sound more aggressive & more urgent than Dylans'....I think I prefer this version ( just ) :-)
This is a solid version. I was surprised the MB didn't do more. I had a record shop at the time of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGIpy3p1LlI and A&M were pushing them like crazy, lots of give-aways and heavy promo. The buzz was pretty intense but they seemed to dribble away far too soon. Shame.
Great Jam!! Fab story - Going back in time, is not a bad isea - I wouldv'e tried to "bump" into you and a few others I think our cumulative histories could have improved...well unless any of us were jerks way back when....doubt it ;-)
@BertrandRustles Yes, I remember there was a big push for them but it didn't work, did it? I think that this was because they were a good band with talent. In other words, aimed at adults who generally DON'T like hype or being told what to buy, unlike youngsters. Also, their name is a little dull & forgettable too!
@SheRa Just think, you go back in time & you could bump into yourself . I think that me & my younger self would spend all of our time arguing & insulting each other! Hahauhahaw!
@debutch The Morrison thing is just PR, they are waiting for the sweet spot. And my younger self met the older-than-now me, but I was pissed and don't remember it now. Plus it hasn't re-happened yet so I can't comment on what I was like. I'll probably be drunk again then as well. There's a lesson in this....probably.
@adrian4acn ... well, if your youngerAND older self were BOTH pissed, then that's a relief, isn't it? .. Can't beat a bit of consistency & continuity, eh? ;-)
@shiningsun2k Ha Jeremy! I thought you'd gone missing today! ...it's funny but when the 'regular as clockwork' punters like yourself are not around for about 24 hours ( like Jess @BladeRunner yesterday) , then I notice it straight away & it feels like you've been gone for about a week!! haha! Anyway, really pleased you're enjoying my series! ( I've just thought of another two to do but there's SIX more to go! Phew! )
@BladeRunner@debutch I know what you mean! It's the same way for me when either of you are away a few hours longer than usual, let alone - heaven forbid - away for a whole day or longer for vacation or something! I wish that were my case, but we just had some offsite training for work today and I wasn't able to catch up on break like I often do

@debutch I like it. I'm not going to crawl over broken glass for it, but it is good.

Good version - other than the lack of Rivera's violin

Big like.
paulgdaly
@debutch I have no idea who Buzz Lighthouse is. It sounds like he should have been on Sun.
adrian4acn
@debutch Its a fluid situation.
shiningsun2k
HA! Thank the gods nobody did decide to tamper with history, time and space, etc! Another great presentation and I'm really digging this version.
debutch
@brianberrington Thanks Brian. I'm pleased.
debutch
@paulgdaly I don't know who he is either...must've come to me in a dream....
debutch
@adrian4acn ...I bet it is...
