Around 1988, I spotted Morrissey doing a photo shoot about one minute walk from my home in Wapping, East London. He picked a good location. Seeped in charisma & history, he had narrow cobblestoned streets, stacked with Victorian warehouses & iron bridge walkways seen above your head. Parts of David Lynch's "The elephant man" was filmed here & you could visualise the cranes working & almost smell the west Indian spices as you wandered through the heart of Docklands, the home I loved for 10 years
I missed this actual book-cover photo here on the 'wonky' bollard which my son , Daniel always used to leap-frog in later years on our way back from the park...but I did watch him on the steps of St. Patrick's Church, near the disused "Turk's Head" pub, looking forlorn, far-away & senstive in a turquoise shirt & with his fluffed-up fringe defying gravity.......
..Well, his expression of melancholia quickly turned to one of disgust as soon as he clocked the two see-thru' plastic bags of animal organs floating in blood that I was carrying. Y'see, I was returning home from my local butchers with some sheeps' hearts & liver for some kind of offal feast that evening and Morrissey, being a strict veggie, seemed to be annoyed & distracted by my continued presence, hangin' around watching for most of the lunch period......
...but my memory that amuses me the most was of a filthy white van that somehow squeezed past the road-cones & drove slower & slower up to Morrissey out of curiosity, almost coming to a stop before a big burly geezer with his beer-belly hanging out of the window bellowed, "WHO'S A PRETTY BOY, THEN??" before zooming off...Morrissey was NOT amused!!! ...Welcome to the East-End Moz! HaWHaWHaW!!!
Oh lucky you! I do love Morrissey and as a vegetarian since 1982 I would have been disgusted too ;) Yes a beautiful version and a very chilling song. You do have some wonderful stories, I mean it when I say you should publish them!! x x
Great Notes -I'm doing same thing on LL - Did you see my post with links on how LA Latinos LOVE Morrissy on LL? Just for you, I'll repost the info as it's fascinating- first heard about it around 5 years ago from a fab doc but the trend just keeps getting deeper! Let me find my LL post and I'll repost here - you will be enthralled - promise:)
Serioulsy - it's a HUGE subculture in East LA Hispanic community - I cna't find the full doc but look at the above short vid to give sense - it's odd, but makes sense:) xo
@debutch Isn't this why we DO TIMJ to find out things like this - tell me if you knew about this or if I'm the first to let you in on this HUGE subculture? It's all about outsiders uniting:) And these are SUPER Macho guys! Digging Morrissey!
Quote it evokes very masculine, straight men men to run up to the stage and hug him...WOW - wrap your head around this:) it's actually really special and beautiful...Morrissey is able to do this!
@debutch I lived in Mile End for most of the '90s, used to drink in those great old riverside pubs in Limehouse and Wapping ... I heard there was a really great butcher in Wapping, a mate who was keen on pig's knuckles told me he was the best butcher in the East End ... same place, I wonder? Never saw Mozza, but Sinead O'Connor once made a video outside my house :)
Wouldn't surprise me if this story had made it into HIS autobiography, @debutch! Musically I wonder if he was inspired by the equally chilling cover of this by close mate Stipey and his Atlantean chums
Found the Doc: http://www.williamejones.com/collections/about/16 Is it Really so Strange As the foppish, sexually ambiguous, brilliant singer/songwriter of ’80's music legends The Smiths, Morrissey brought intelligence, wit and mystery to pop tunes still unmatched in their ability to make grown men cry. Williamm E. Jones interviews a new, but equally fanatical, fan base of The Smiths and Morrissey: Latino youths in East Los Angeles.
@debutch sorry for flooding your site with this post but I found this so fascinating when I first saw it - just lost my head and had to share:) I think I felt connected by how we would THINK this would be unusual, but because of this connection, it makes me feel good about how music can connect us all:)
Now - problem with LL - this great info - how to share with Smith/Morrissey fans? And nobody like my loops or stories at LL - at TIMJ - got feedback - sigh. lonely at LL:( ....Poo Bag - I'll get over it:)
Not heard this sung by Morrissey before, like it...
Love the intro as always, you just have to love white van man dont you ;)
Love the background too, I have been reading a lot of historical drama novels with a navel theme recently so anything maritime and old is of interest to me at the mo...
@melissapulo ...Well, there are comment boxes. That's a good start! I know how you feel Mel. I felt very reluctant to join up while TIMJ is still running. It felt like betrayal!
@lesakramer5 I know what you mean Lesa. On LL, you write, you speak but you get the feeling that everyone is still too busy checking out the place to listen & respond. I'd give it time Lesa. I think although it won't be the perfect replacement, it'll be a decent one.
@lesakramer5 Yes! I have seen the Morrissey documentary before! THANK you for the inks Lesa. Very considerate of you. You're such a busy bee. :-) Yes, I think that the Morrissey/ straight men love relationship thing is a kinda unique phenomenon. I'd never seen that in the history of pop music before but I always expected it to happen at some point. Morrissey,as well as a gay icon, was also the ultimate heart- on -his -sleeve mouthpiece for a million straight males who...(cont)
@pez Oh, the riverside pubs yes! "The Town of Ramsgate", " THe Captain Kid" & of course, (arguably) the oldest pub in England, " The Prospect of Whitby" Lovely to have a pint by the river! :-)
@debutch - sigh, of course you wold know - makes me happy:) So this song goes out to all HUMANS that need a person to express their deepest feelings... Nothing wrong with having a a hero that does it for you:)
@pez I think I knew that butcher!.....celebrity neighbours? Well, one of mine in Wapping was Cher! Honest! Don't get me wrong, I'm only an ordinary working guy who had an affordable tiny house in Wapping but 2 minutes walk from me in a super-expensive apartment overlooking the Thames was my neighbour Cher! I also spotted several other stars around my way but the story of how I first saw Cher go right past my house is another story before we close-down!
@Sid_Bonkers Yeh, good ol' white van man. You can always rely on them to upset someone! haha! ....interest in naval history? Yeh, fascinating stuff. I bet @kingofmen is into all that too, eh?
@PeteLaberge Yes, I've noticed you spreading the word on a few other pages. There's a lot of care & commitment towards each other on this site. Good on yet, mate. :-)
@Sid_Bonkers@ian38018 Oh! I WONDERED why I was thrown out of my local library when I asked the pretty female assistant if I could have a look at her navel department......
@debutch Cher? In Wapping? I wonder if she was drawn by the quality of the offal on offer. Tell all, me and @Sid_Bonkers are on butcher's hooks I mean tenterhooks.

debutch
@stevefawcett I didn't think of that. Nice one!
debutch
@iprefernotto I can think of a couple of words describing what I'd done to Morrissey that day. I'm not sure 'inspired' was one of them, though!
Sid_Bonkers
@ian38018 yes I think youve cracked it, if I were searching for navel books to read I doubt that my search would take long ;)

@debutch Cher? In Wapping? I wonder if she was drawn by the quality of the offal on offer. Tell all, me and @Sid_Bonkers are on butcher's hooks I mean tenterhooks.

@pez HaHa! ..I'm trying to work out if I can bring the subject of offal into the story of Cher in Wapping but I don't think I can manage that!
