I'm with you. It's one of the first cassettes I owned and one of my favorite albums of all time, but I never became a huge Dire Straits fan beyond that either. What a great, smooth jam.
Great track! I think Mark Knopfler is one of THE top guitarists! If I remember right, tho it was very smokey, back in the day, he used to play with a band called Brewers Droop that used to play at my local dive. I have smokey memories of him being outstanding then. :)
@dutchbeeblebrox I was lucky enough to see them live in London (yeah @europabridge1 "down south" ha ha). Also saw Mark Knopfler as part of an Amnesty international music night; the Secret Policeman's Third Ball. I have liked most of Dire Straits work, but this song is a stand out.
exactly the same for me. Never became a huge fan of the band, but I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard the song a million years ago...brilliant.
I just NEVER EVER tire of this song...takes me back to a football trip. Brussels bar, late at night. Juke box with this played countless times...by me... ;-)
classic. can never separate this song with the memory of being in a backpackers in Pai, Thailand where they had their own bar and house band. The band played this practically every night in their broken english. happy days.

Stupidly I was in a band that covered this once. The guitarist could just about rip the solo if he managed is tokeing skilfully.
