Big Black Buck by Donnie

“This was hard to find, but I found it! Donnie's neo-soul 2003 project, 'Colored Section,' gave us this ragtime banger, touting the same "modern slaves" analogy as Kanye's 'Yeezus' -- both haranguing about the interpellation of black men into the parasitic racial dynamics of U.S. capitalism. Unfortunately, Donnie's lyrics go sour: He warns of the "Illuminati waging quiet war." I've always prioritized music over lyrics (because music is for the music), but it's nice, I think, to realize what you're hearing. It's a shame, too; sounds great, and otherwise, Donnie's lyrics are actually very trenchant and informed.”
