Hard to believe this band could be underrated, but when I look at their body of work, I have to conclude that it is true. So many fantastic contributions from them.
@stereoGrover They're in a Hall of Fame somewhere as the most influential British Rock Band of all time. Ray Davies has written for other bands and singers ever since the Sixties.
Ray Davies suffered badly as a songwriter/performer due to the sheer cleverness of his lyrics and his general themes for songs. I remember some other kids at school going on about how "clever-ass" it all was, and "give me the Stones any day". I always appreciated them (if you remember the Jams of my first vinyl singles, "Tired of Waiting for You" was one of the first purchases). And Dave Davies suffered through sheer sibling rivalry and jealousy. He wanted to be his big brother, but couldn't be.
@leejohnson The jealousy was always there, and I think it ruined Dave Davies. It's a pity really, I think Ray Davies proved to be too big a shadow for him to stand in in the end.
@jovisgoesnuts Almost certainly :) My dad used to say 'Such a nice boy, Roddie' whenever the subject was mentioned!! On Ray and Dave he remained stum, sadly.
@jovisgoesnuts There was a tv programme solely about Dave last year. He was certainly a wreck, but an informative one. I didn't realise he was so young (and pretty) when they became famous. Only 15/16 and given to dressing in his girlfriends' clothes! He believed Ray was jealous of his solo success with songs like 'Death of a Clown', but he didn't seem that bitter.

My dad used to teach Ray and Dave Davies (and Rod Stewart!) when they were in Muswell Hill. Weirdly embarrassing, for some reason...

@Manchesterlive I don't know, but i wouldn't be surprised.
