Go Ahead John by Miles Davis

“Somehow, I'd never heard Miles' "Big Fun" album, which collects some assorted recordings from 1969-1972. One of the most interesting (and kind of befuddling) tracks is "Go Ahead John," a 28 1/2-minute epic recorded in March 1970, shortly after "Bitches Brew" and smack in the middle of the "Jack Johnson" sessions. Throw headphones on for this one and give it a listen, paying special attention to the mix. The drums and horns hard bounce from channel to channel, to the point I had to check my headphones to make sure they weren't shorting out on me. It's a bizarre engineering choice because it's so distracting (but also, admittedly, intriguing). The first 13 minutes are presented here. (More about the mixing here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Fun_%28Miles_Davis_album%29%23.22Go_Ahead_John.22 )”
