Chicago Transit Authority, better know as just Chicago, recorded this track at Caribou Ranch in Colorado, USA. Written by Peter Cetera for the group and recorded for their album 'Chicago VII' (1974), lead vocals were supplied by Terry Kath, while Cetera sang the song's bridge. The third US single to be released from that album, it reached #11 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and hit #1 on the Easy Listening chart.
The Beach Boys just happened to be at Caribou Ranch when "Wishing You Were Here" was being recorded, and three members of that band - Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson - joined Cetera, at the singer's request, to provide back-up harmonies on the recording. Although it received generous airplay in the UK in the mid-Seventies, this track was never released to that market as a single. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_%28band%29

@phirnis Not in the original studio mix, apparently, but you can definitely see and hear him among the backing beards here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsuv4HPGNHM

And lead singer/bass guitarist Terry Kath, before he accidentally blew his brains out at mock 'Russian Roulette'.
