My personal favourite from the "Pin Ups" album of 1973, which hit No. 1 in the UK and managed No. 21 in the USA (for a compilation of covers, and with no new material from the master, this was a really good position to get to, to be honest). Not at all a favourite LP of my pals back in the day, but then neither was any of his pre-Visconti work. They also had too much respect for Pink Floyd, in the case of this treatment, which was very progressive to say the least.
Lots of studio tinkering went into the album as a whole, and it relied as much on production techniques as it did on solid musical prowess. Drummer Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey had minced off in a sulk, following the break-up of the Spiders from Mars by Bowie, so Aynsley Dunbar stepped in to provide a solid backbeat. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/See_Emily_Play#Other_versions
learn something every day....never heard this version before...love the ''going off to space out bit,...ehh,i'm a bit with your friends,Floyd, its a Floyd track, probably cos of nostalga...i saw them just before this track. SO TOTALLY SADLY NEVER SEEN BOWIE,and hate how he doesnt show himself on his new album,if Len can,David can.........interesting,liked
I loved the album, still do. It introduced me to some great acts from the previous decade, and to the Pink Floyd of Syd Barrett. Not a dud track on the whole LP.
Funny, Pin-ups was never one of my favourites, but might be an album to revisit now that I have a better appreciation of Bowie's early roots. Also great creepy vocals on this track!
As a contract filler (which this started out as, due to Bowie's legal commitment to produce another 'Spiders' album after "Aladdin Sane"), this was remarkably good as a production project. There is, however, something a little soul-less about a self-penning master such as Bowie re-visiting Sixties standards hewn in rock by their original makers. While perfectly fine overall, it didn't fill the void left by the break-up/suicide of the 'Spiders', and "Diamond Dogs" is just pug ugly. I hate it.

Love this version. So does my wife, Emily, who is in love with David Bowie and likes to hear him say her name. :)
