Although I wasn't even born at the time, so probably can't appreciate the context, the whole "Clapton is god" thing seems to have been hyperbole of the highest kidney. For me, Jack Bruce has a much more outstanding legacy - pre 1980s, anyway.
@Jeffman1 Clapton did seem to stagnate after Cream. Bruce on the other hand released Songs For A Tailor, so I'd have to agree with you.
