@philipnareike That I don't mind so much (England aren't very good at the mo). What is always depressing is that England play in the worst game/spectacle of the tournament. Algeria last time and Ireland in 1990 being examples of truly awful football
@mloup Yeah, but England should've won it in 1990, they were better than Germany and I believe they would've beaten Argentina. Also Ireland were far from a push over back then. But yes, that England team at the moment will have to vastly improve if they have any chance of winning it. They are better than the second round though...so lets say quarter finals.
Congrats, 2014 wouldn't be the same without England out in quarter-finals =) It reminds me of Brazilian's 1982 theme, that even was the single of that year: http://youtu.be/KSTWYajMGMc I don't think I'll have the guts to jam it, though.
@mloup @shirl good ol shirl always the diplomat ,,,,we [ england ] need a whole lot more guile and savvy to get any were near it, vancouver matt wont thank me for saying this but i might have a few pfennigs on the germans,,,,just coming good at the right time,,,,
Haha. I think it's pretty equal now. The women are obviously much better though. It's big in Catholic leagues and at the College level but that's about it unfortunately. I never got that. And yeah, it's like rugby. Sort of. :)
....or we'll have a streaky group stage, scrape through to the qualifying rounds, edge nervously past one more team before crashing out amid an atmosphere of recrimination and bitterness. one of the two.
still, I'm pleased we got there. and this is much better for my 9 yr old son than what i suffered in 1973, then again in 1977. as i pointed out to him - i watched England play in Brazil in 1970 at the age of 5, then didn't see them at a world cup til 1982, at the age of 17!!!!
@simonp Here's something to cheer you up...re-live The Golden Year http://youtu.be/AcE86JmIN3E Just couldn't resist it...Every English supporter was behind you that year...can't you do the same for us next year...? Sorry, I just couldn't resist it
@antonywaltjarv@philipnareike was just talking about 78 with an England supporting mate last night. Ally and the whole Scottish media had the country convinced (convinced I tell ya) that we were going to win the whole damn thing. Then we played Peru and I had a very important lesson in life: disappointment is always around the corner

@mloup I sense The Group of Death beckoning...maybe not even that far....negative thinking can be a good thing

@philipnareike Group of Death: Argentina, Belgium, Ghana?

@HaveACuppaTea Fair comment re 1990...but only after the team and system was changed. Ireland weren't a pushover, just dogged Route 1
