He collected over 189,000 pounds, and never gave me a penny of it. The man was, and remains a slimeball, and an Asshole with a capitol A.
To continue, YOU STILL STOLE THE MONEY AND HAVEN'T TRANSFERRED THE COPYRIGHT BACK TO ME. Just to reiterate, and so people know, It was 189,000 Pounds British Sterling.
This ain't chump change scumbag. Do I sound angry? Deal with it. I could educate my 4 year old son with that money. Why don't you take out a loan, give me my money, and pay it off with the royalties you're still getting? If this hasn't been eating away at you all these years, you are the personification of what's wrong today.'
I'm not sure if Shawn Phillips did get any royalties for his composition in the end.
It is a terrific piece of music - there is something really melancholy and almost painfully despairing about it. What a shame to hear e was ripped off so badly.
Oh no...this is what Mick Weaver says about it: I can't stand it any longer. My name is Mick Weaver, and I played the B3 on the World in Action theme music. Shawn Phillips gets all the bloody credit. Yes, he came to me with a descending chord progression, I did the rest. We spent an evening in a recording studio in the west end of London putting together segments of different lengths, and Granada T.V. used it for 20 plus years.
Not only did I not receive one word of credit, I didn't even get the session fee. Phillps gets the musical credit, Jonathon Weston got the money, and I am down the price of the tube fare I payed to get to the bloody studio. Makes me fucking SICK.
@kemiladashdot I know brother comrade. Let's find out where this scoundrel lives, break in, steal his valuables and distribute them amongst Shawn and Mick. Nobody will recognise you, now you're in disguise
thats very cool philly,,,thanks for the story ...context is everything.. this is a great piece of aural drama, i guess a descending hammond organ stops out thru a leslie cabinet simple but ,,the best are right ,,, i have heard so many story's of deceit like this , that it makes my stomach turn..yeah good work on throwing some light around..
I hate that there is no come back on this kind of scumbag. and that anyone could rip someone off so blatantly - not surprising - but it sickens me.
It is a haunting piece - used to make me think I was about to find out something terrible!
yes !!knew it was something like that...never heard all the piece before..so different to just that little clip.. ooh, just read your write up..lets have a communial Spit!!!
@kemiladashdot Margaret Thatcher called World in Action 'a lot of Trotskyists' It's amazing how many journalists worked for it who went on to do great things
This whole story has made me so angry as well... and learning more, through the comments only aggravates this - it's absurd! And regarding the tv show... it's so regrettable that (truly) investigative journalism is getting almost banned from open broadcasting channels...
@BladeRunner@philipnareike This jam has spiked my interest in WiA, just read the wiki entry must try and search out any old clips. So far removed from anything mainstream today, thank god for the rise of alternatives. Present day journalists just appear as establishment whores. I still follow John Pilger who's absolutely relevant. Great thought provoking jam Philip.
@BladeRunner ...we need to show our outrage ,,,by face scalping the thief and sowing his face on a football , and using it for the opening game of world cup,,,with the logo ,,''this is what happens to those who betray art '' how many times have you heard storys just like this jess,,,,and thatcher calling these guys trotskists, is a compliment , coming from the mouth of a traitor to all good things about u.k , fine piece of music whatever the backstory.
@kemiladashdot ok, now that I've seen is been removed from mainstream sources, wtf! count me in - i'll search for it as well - i wanna know what this show's about!
@kingofmen Exactly!!! Oh, let me put correctly what's been through my mind: when lips like those say things trying to depreciate something ... to me it sounds like the utmost compliment!
@kingofmen the music is beautiful indeed, i like this Hammond, 60's 70's kinda thing - and yeah... we listen so many times this kind of story, the guy pulling the rug beneath others feet, is atrocious. and the worst is that they can live with themselves... but that's another amazing thing from the internet: maybe it's not much, but we can make noise!!!
@BladeRunner ......so we face scalp the bastard ...?.....old skool....?.....get biblical on his rich plagarist ass..........say yes ,,,,,,,to war for art ,,,and treasure....
@kingofmen let me get my small double bladed - and very handy - dagger... I'm ready! Loved the "war for art"! (can we humiliate him before the scalpeling...please... )
@BladeRunner@kemiladashdot ,first we over power the corrupt royalty structure and send the kapitalist hyenas to the re education kamps [ kamp pol pot one is particular for its execution of pain ],the all royalties will go straight to the artists ,who will hence forth be know as god blokes and god birds, saviours of all thats holly and righteous, then anyone with more gelt than they can spend in aldi is to be tortured into servitude of the masses, cameron and his running dogs to taste the lash
@kemiladashdot@BladeRunner ,,,,JESSICA god queen of the sacred quill , UNLEASH THE MOCCAMBO,,,,, supa kev did not know we had this secret weapon, the brazilian dancing magik will soothe angered soul and vanquish the enemys of art ,, and people who pay with credit card for one item in tesco ,,,let me hear ya whoaaaaa ooooohhhhhh
@kingofmen I really laughed out loud at the tesco part - but, yeah - all the macumba powers are slowly being unleashed and carnaval awaits... behold enemies of art, for your day is just one day nearer...
I'm really not at all sure about the torture - but the equivalent of World In Action is desperately needed. I heard on the radio today that 'most of he country' is in favour of the present Dark Lord's cuts to benefits for the disabled...This was followed by quite a creepy discussion about 'social Darwinism'...People kept laughing in all the wrong places... I think I need to go and polish the minicab....Great jam
@alisonsghost Well said! Very true words. It was said that the demise of World in Action coincided with the dumbing down of British journalism.....polish the minicab? Is that a euphemism or are you a cab driver?

philipnareike
@Astromonkey Yes, it's so evocative, it really brings back some great childhood memories......power cuts mostly...
philipnareike
@Astromonkey I think musicians being ripped off happened a lot back then...
Astromonkey
@philipnareike It still happens across all the arts - probably more so with the internet, though people do get called on it more I think.

This kind of thing makes me so angry!!!!!!!!!
Niels_Footman
I'd never heard this in its full form before. It practically reeks of late-70s, early-80s decline. Chilling.

kemiladashdot
@natyblooming Yes, and the music doesn't help either. Even without the injustice, it conjures up a sense that all is not right with the world.
