Ha! Great! I wish I'd been a rock fan when I was younger. I'm really tuning into it now. I wonder if there's a video on YouTube of the flying bass player!
....to be truthful, they were my second band but I don't count the first ( David Gates & Bread) because I didn't like them. I was given the ticket & I just wanted to experience a live concert. Deep Purple was my first gig "of choice"...
I was a teenage metalhead myself and have the first four Gillan albums (this being the first one I bought before going back for the better Glory Road). Love the fact that john McCoy (bassist) formed Mammoth, named after that fact that they were all fat gits.
@philipnareike@debutch Haven't been able to use gifs since early days of TIMJ, anybody tell me the closest damp field with cows in.... apart from davids page obviously.
First band I ever saw was Madness and I think they were supported by Altered Images. My biggest fandom as a teen was Ultravox. A very different scene altogether!
Great thread on "first concerts"... mine was Elton John in 1973 - the night after John Lennon appeared on stage with him. It would be Lennon's last ever public performance.

That's funny! The first band I saw live was Deep Purple ( with Ian Gillan) in 1970 , aged 15! That makes me feel old!
