Phil, he had an impressive story... it's gotta be really something what he went through! It's interesting how often we don't actually realize the dimension of what our parents and/or grandparents might have experienced, when we grow up listening to the story. Luckily we do grow up and have our own experiences so we can appreciate theirs... beautiful tribute for Herr Nareike ;)

@SheRa @lindatee @jackietheripper @MadameZia @BladeRunner Thank you for your kind comments. It means a lot. It was really too much for a child to go through, he was a victim of circumstance, like so many other kids of that wartime era. He'd actually been in the Army cadets since the age of 14, which probably helped him survive. I've a photograph of him when he went home for leave, with him and his younger brother and 3 sisters. He looks like a baby in a German Army uniform and swastika armband

He didn't talk about his experiences too much but there are a few stories I've never forgotten. There was a particular officer who all the young ones hated because he was such a bastard. The night before going to battle they all got drunk and he was playing with his pistol shooting it in the air; then he accidently (on purpose) shot himself, giving himself a very light wound....very conveniently for him...he got to go to hospital....and the rest.....I'm sure I saw something similar in a movie..
