Nicholas J Talbot was born in the south-east of England in about 1976, moving to Bristol in the late 1990s. Drawn there by work from the likes of 'Third Eye Foundation' and 'Flying Saucer Attack', he resolved to develop his own talents along the same lines. He became a member of 'Assembly Communications', a troupe similar to 'My Bloody Valentine', whose swift rise felt uncomfortably beyond the control of each of the band members themselves, leading to their break-up.

Instead, Talbot embarked on a "do-it-yourself" path, and founded "Silent Age Records", along with Guy Bartell. Adopting the pseudonym 'Gravenhurst', he released his debut album, "Internal Travels", in 2002, as well as promoting the early works of such West Country luminaries as 'Mole Harness' and 'War Against Sleep'. He also found time to partner Bartell in establishing and maintaining the experimental electronic outfit, 'Bronnt Industries Kapital'.

Still on "Silent Age", he released his second album, "Flashlight Seasons", in 2003, but signing to "Warp Records" shortly afterwards. The second effort was a more complex work than his sparse debut album, thanks in part to the increased use of drone-heavy arrangements in sustaining a "foreboding" mood. It was awarded "Album of the Year" for 2003 by West Country listings bible, "Venue" magazine.

By the time of the third album by 'Gravenhurst', "Fires in Distant Buildings", they had expanded into a sonic folk duo, with Talbot on vocals, guitars and electronic devices, and Dave Collingwood on drums. Session musicians have included Paul Nash, and, latterly, Robin Allender. Talbot was also a freelance journalist, maintained a website and wrote a blog.
