I could pretty much do an entire "Surf's Up" week such is the wealth of great songs on the LP. Most credit is given to the title track , a "Smile" out-take, and Brian's superb "'Til I Die". However I think the LP is really Carl Wilson's. He pretty much produced it as "musical director" of the band, brought the Smile version of Surf's Up (the track) to LP readiness and wrote (with manager Jack Reilly) two of the other standout songs - this being one of them.
In addition, much like Brian had done with Pet Sounds and Smile, Carl pulled the whole track together and recorded it with minimal input from the other BBs until they had to act backing vocals.
Brilliant stuff and lovely biographical detail. Carl is my 2nd favourite Beach Boy after Dennis so any Carl love is greatly appreciated. Used to great effect in Almost Famous.
