Pure Bathing Culture, Portland-based by way of Brooklyn, is at its core a duo; vocalist Sarah Versprille and guitarist Daniel Hindman, once members of West Coast folk band Vetiver, create a shimmering pop that reminds me of an American Cocteau Twins. I've enjoyed tracing the band's development from their lo-fi 2012 eponymous debut EP to their 2013 full-length Moon Tides, which is slightly more polished; it features the primitive drum programming of the EP while adding sparse live percussion. I saw the group perform in autumn 2014 and they've expanded to a full band with a live drummer; I am curious to know if their next release will find them moving toward more studio sheen. Whatever their approach, Versprille and Hindman craft bewitching music. This is the opening track from Moon Tides.
