“Today, 13th June would have been my Dad's birthday. He wasn't much of a music fan, but he did like James Last and Bert Kaempfert...and a bit of Johnny Cash. Of course I always loathed his music when I was younger...but listening to this track here I can now appreciate it. (not so sure about that album cover though!) He would have been 89 today. Born in 1926 in East Germany. I don't think I really appreciated what he went through...a brief history of his early life: in 1942 he was a young soldier fighting in WW2. He fought on The Eastern and Western Fronts. He was captured by The American Army in 1944 in France (when he recounted this to me he always said he was relieved - and always said he was well treated as a POW) and was shipped to Souhampton. He was going to be taken to the USA but due to bad weather stayed in the UK. He was 18 years old. 4 years later he was released from the various Prison camps he'd been held in. Then had to work for 4 years before he was officially released”
