What I probably was listening to most this week...10 years ago. Over a 14-year period beginning in 1995, Buddy Miller released what I think may be several of America's most criminally underappreciated albums...though they certainly were loved by an array of performers (probably most notably Lee Ann Womack) who have covered his work. The 2004 album Universal United House of Prayer -- featuring several co-writes with wife Julie, including this cut -- arguably is his best. There are videos of the actual track from the album, but I chose to feature this performance a few years later with Levon Helm, who covered "Wide River to Cross" on his Dirt Farmer album. The song ultimately became a bit of an elegy for Helm, when his daughter Amy joined with Roger Waters to sing it at the Love for Levon tribute concert following Helm's death. Seek out Universal and Miller's other work ASAP! (Album released September 21, 2004)
