If you know your jazz, you'll know Miles Davis' album Bitches Brew. It's always a brave person to take on a classic and remould it for their own expression. But that is, of course, the stuff that great jazz has always been made of. Reworking music is its life blood. This track is Wilson's interpretation of Davis' original "Miles Runs The Voodoo Down". She adds lyrics and cuts the length down from the original jam's 14 mins to roughly 4. She also picks up the tempo, allowing to transform into an intricate funky scuttle, away from the hard dirty grit of the original, with wistful brass interjections. It has urban street cool all over it & it works for me. I feel it does what all good reinterpretations should do, revealing other facets of the piece's musical character without compromising or dictating to that character. The track is from her 1999 album Travelin' Miles, which is her tribute album to Miles Davis. If you want to compare, Miles' original is easily found online.   1
