#AutobiographyMix At my old job a coworker mentioned I listen to "music" (finger air quotes) and Cat Power was the example given. In the same period of late 90's binge watching of M2, which was in that crucial bit of early college listening, I started to separate from the pop music rule for sound. Not everything was a harmony, a beat, a voice, verse-chrous-verse. Suddenly ambient and drone made sense. Likewise, singing didn't need to conform. And I think Chan was a big part of that. Her voice is an instrument but not the *same* instrument and so become even more fascinating. I've thought the most interesting song is one by a parent to a child for the same reasons the best food is when you visit your folks. The resonance, importance and self are real measures of quality, not simply conforming to an accepted notion. It's how proficient singers are often boring. Realizing that, so much more opens up: Group Sound, Congotronics, Indian ragas. There is no one like Chan and that matters most.
