Les Soeurs Jumelles by Catherine Deneuve & Françoise Dorléac
“I was supposed to be spending the week watching somewhere in the neighborhood of ten films by Jacques Demy (and a couple of films about him directed by his wife Agnes Varda). Unfortunately for me, I've been way too busy to see hardly any movies this week. The last film of Demy's I saw was on Valentine's Day, The Young Girls of Rochefort starring Catherine Deneuve & Françoise Dorléac. They play twin sisters Delphine and Solange (indeed, the opening lyrics of the song are, "We are twin sisters/ Born under the sign of Gemini") who yearn to escape the doldrums of their small town life. Deneuve and Dorléac are actual sisters (but not twins); unfortunately Dorléac (who was a star before Deneuve) died in a car accident shortly after this film was completed.”
