“So yeah, Danny Elfman scored that 50 Shades of Grey movie. It makes more sense than I would've thought, what with his history of dark fantasies of another sort. I really love the use of soft percussive instruments here, with vibraphone slowly giving over to xylophone. The weaving of guitar and piano and strings also make a lot of sense, And I always like how he incorporates bass guitar in his compositions (there's also lots of drum kit in the rest of the soundtrack). It's not a very theme-driven score like most of his work, which I blame on the source music probably taking the best cues, but this is a strong, unique entry in the extensive Elfman catalogue.”
