“I’ve always been in love with Sakamoto’s theme for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, which is just as haunting as the film itself. Given the fact that I like both the song and David Sylvian, it’s strange how I’ve listened to the instrumental version a lot more than the vocal one. Having listened to this version for the first time since discovering it, I’ve found that the vocals almost act as a conduit for the characters to channel their struggles between the film and the song. The same goes for the music video, which features some clever and tasteful editing.”
