ok i'm about to write a small essay about this song, because it's one of my top ten, probably top five deerhunter songs. bradford has said it's a "fantasy about being normal" when he was a teenager, and it's so beautifully done: the whole thing sounds like an inexpertly fabricated memory of this adolescence he idealizes but never got to experience. i particularly love the lyrics, how he uses these impressionistic images to paint only a vague idea of what his youth could've been like, and i love the one image that does stand out: "the car ride home, was smiling again," because that's really what matters. and the fact that he can only muster these half-formed images is like a quiet lamentation of the reality of his youth, because they're doomed to remain a kind of fever dream inside his head.
