They're back.
From 1999, here's the first Bond theme I ever heard. Suitable enough, given it sounds exactly -- exactly -- like a Bond theme. Garbage's Shirley Manson affects a Bassey register and reminds me of a drag queen by the ferocity of her theatrics, and because she seems to be imitating something she's not: a lush, fire-eating balladress, done up for potency like one Veronica Lake-shaped firework or else slinking around, eyebrows arched, as if to foreshadow the Britney Spears awaiting us at the turn of the century. It's not post-modern but was a big hit for Garbage. Music critics called it the best Bond theme in eons. Musically, it aligns with "Tomorrow Never Dies," "Die Another Day," "Casino Royale," and "Quantum of Solace" -- all scored by David Arnold. The lyrics -- "There's no point in living if you can't feel alive" -- are Don Black's, along with Bond lyrics "Diamonds never lie to me/Hold one up and then caress it" and "His eye may be on you or me./Who will he bang?/We shall see."
Main theme from the movie soundtrack of "The World is Not Enough".
