It would be so much easier to pick "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" or "Bottle" but too few dig deep into what this man left for us. This ain't everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine. Most famous for his spoken word efforts, this Bobby Bland cover is one of the few times I've heard Gil Scott-Heron actually sing. Gil was a man who wore his heart on his sleeve. He kept his feet on the ground but his head was in the clouds. He was a forward thinker, but looked back often in disgust at what mankind has wrought. What we do to each other and ourselves, and he was no angel either. We as a species seem to have this predilection for self destruction, but we can also rise above all that if we just try, and in Gil Scott-Heron's work we can sense that desire to break the chains not only from society and other men but the chains we place upon ourselves without even realizing it. As Maya Angelou once said, "RISE!" This song reaches into my heart and pulls at it. I hope it touches you too.   14
