This week I've moved a little bit away from the blues & gone soulful, finished off by the Motown documentary on this week. I was raised on many music genres but soul was ever present in my house from Atlantic soul through to the Detroit Motown sound which I have something of a geek like knowledge of. I've known this interpretation of 'Grapevine' since I was a small child. Upbeat, funky, hints of jazz chords and blues notes (listen to the piano), Gladys Knight makes singing this sound easy. Released in 1967, a year before Marvin Gaye's version (which I believe was recorded before the Pips recorded theirs), the two shouldn't be compared really. They both have distinctive characters of their own, display the prowess and soul of each singer in turn through quite contrasting lenses. I've loved both equally since childhood, but this version isn't heard so much now, which is a shame. Been listening to it this week so I present to you Gladys Knight & The Pips!
