So I think I've figured out why I really like gypsy punk but don't care as much for celtic punk, and that difference is Gogol Bordello. Sure, all those bands have an affinity for accordions and testosterone, but these dudes never rely on those tropes to inform the narrative. Gogol Bordello's themes tend to reflect the international and political situations of today; the traditional-regional instrumentation never feels like a put-on or a stretch to feel current. The cross-cultural influences are a natural hybrid here, as exemplified by the flowing multilingual lyrics in this track. I especially love the percussive space between the punk guitars and accordions/fiddles.
