My favorite track from the Happy Mondays' signature album and Madchester's own Sgt. Pepper's. I am sometimes most in love when I'm convinced to like music that shouldn't work for me. The bass and guitar that feel like Steely Dan, the prominent keyboards and their wonky blurts, and the cheerfully degenerate lyrics should all turn me off. But the genius of the Mondays was their ability to turn trash into treasure with a potent brew of largely crap influences. Egad, these guys also turned revolting disco hit "Stayin' Alive" into a whacked-out, magnificent treat. In the end, the exuberance of Ryder's vocals and the medium, baggy beat win my heart or my feet, as appropriate, over every time.
I blame Guy Garvey for this. He threw Dennis and Lois at me like a music egg, hitting me right between the eyes and running into my ears for 4 minutes 25 seconds.
