I watched Control last night, and this was the first song they played, and it just hit me that the audience was seeing the best band of all time play before their eyes and they didn't even know it. Amongst the mediocrity of seventies music, in this tiny venue that only shitty garage bands occupied, they were witnessing the greatest band of all time and there was no way they could expect that when they came. What are the chances of that happening? It's a miracle, really: this band's chance arrival into the world, the pairing of Ian Curtis and the rest, that they just came together and started producing unadulterated, soul-cutting beauty. It actually hurts, how beautiful it is. Angela Chase would approve of the sentiment.
