What I probably was listening to most this week...10 years ago (Part 2). I can't say I've paid much attention to k.d. lang since Hymns from the 49th Parallel was released in 2004, but I played the heck out of this for at least a few days after release. Lots of familiar covers on this tribute to Canadian songwriters (she also covers Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush," Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" and Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"), and the sound is fairly austere -- seemingly an intentional choice given the wintry scene on the front of the CD case. So maybe it doesn't wear well over extended replay...but I still think lang often is a great interpreter of others' material, and I still like this cover of "Helpless." (Album released July 27, 2004)
