Mortal Man by Kendrick Lamar

“Arguably the most accomplished and certainly the most important record of the year so far, Kendrick Lamar's follow up to his widely-regarded masterpiece good kid m.A.A.d city is every bit as admirable as its predecessor and perhaps even more diverse. Quite simply To Pimp A Butterfly is a tour de force, which sees Kendrick tackling everything from institutional racism and hip hop culture to his own personal battles with depression, with elements of jazz and funk music providing the background to his storytelling. Coming in at 16 tracks and 79 minutes long, To Pimp A Butterfly does require more commitment than most moden records, however given the time it is certainly a rewarding listen. Although the album cannot be justified with just one track, the 12 minute epilogue Mortal Man is the perfect taster, during which Kendrick tells of his desire to influence a younger generation. It then concludes with a conversation between himself and Tupac about their struggles to inspire. Enjoy!”
