Waltzing Matilda by Lucy Ward

“Folk Music & WWI. The Gallipoli Campaign was designed to knock the Ottoman Empire out of the War by capturing Constantinople and opening up the southern route to the Russians. Australian&NZ; trops took part as the Australian New Zealand Army Corps, known as the ANZACs. The first landings started on 25th April 1915. The Allies faced massive resistance from the Turks and following almost 188,000 casualties of various sorts the task force withdrew on 9th January 1916. Ottoman casualties were slightly less than 175,000. Every year on 25th April Lucy Ward has been invited to sing this poignant Eric Bogle song at the annual ANZAC Day service held at the Gallipoli Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas. She seldom performs it in concert, however April 25th 2014 was the final date of her band's debut tour and she decided to perform the song to a packed house at The Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath. #Folk #Gallipoli #Ottoman #WWI #LucyWard
