“#TBT Song of the Day: We recently watched the excellent documentary "20 Feet from Stardom", which traces background singing from the '50s to the present day and highlights so many of the background vocals that made the songs we love. This is a clip about the recording of "Gimme Shelter" featuring Merry Clayton's haunting and bracing vocals. Although the documentary covers Darlene Love's heartbreaking early career and Lisa Fischer's incredible range and delicate interpretations, the pieces about Merry are my favorite, especially the part when she talks about recording the background vocals for "Sweet Home Alabama", which is juxtaposed with a clip of her singing "Southern Man". :) A fantastic documentary for any music lover...”
