The band itself couldn't have been less punk, but Lowe's nihilistic lyrics presented in such a deadpan way certainly corresponded with the New Wave aesthetic of the time and I was one of the many punk-fan kids who bought the single, helping to propel it into the top 20. #newwave #punk #pubrock   4
