And at the other end of the doom/goth metal spectrum from My Dying Bride*, and released just a couple of weeks before SWANS, was Paradise Lost's classic ICON — the *other* 1993 album that changed my life, and set me off on the path of doom metal forever more. This track is the opener, and like all good openers it sets the pace for the entire album; dark, bleak, epic, and powerful. Bang your head... slightly faster. (*Not to mention the other end of the A6036. Bizarrely, both bands formed within 5 miles of one another, at around the same time.)
