I JUST DON'T GET IT!  It's an absolute  mystery to me ... the fact that I don't know anyone who is into Portishead and the remarkable part about it is, I never HAVE done! My wife has amiably put up with some of my more 'difficult' music reverberating around the house for years and even SHE doesn't like them. Now, their 2nd ( self-titled ) LP is my favourite album from the past 20-odd years & is firmly cemented in my all-time top 10. When I listen to them, I think.....detachment, isolation, darkness, twilight hours, wet back streets, cigarettes & empty bars....which will probably reflect how it'll be if I ever see them live.....in the corner, ...in the dark,...sad,...alone,...and probably soaking wet from the rain...........   51
