I spent a week traversing a four-disc Rahsaan Roland Kirk collection called Aces Back to Back that I found at my local record store. This track is a stand-out to me; it's not the best or most accomplished, but it's moodily fascinating, especially coming from a jazz musician. A quote in the liner notes described Kirk as "a scholar of the saxophone," which I do prefer. It helps explain how someone can so seamlessly incorporate elements of avant-garde and classical as he does in this piece. His music feels like a place where future, past, and present comingle in the name of jazz.
