San Francisco Patrol by Robyn Hitchcock

“Robyn Hitchcock seems like such a niche artist to be interested in but his talents extend much further than what you might expect them to be (wacky songwriter rambling endlessly about anything/ nothing at all). In the course of a 38 year career in music, Hitchcock has proven to be a capable guitarist and a wonderful songwriter (provided you enjoy that scene, of course).”

Roughly the 20th studio album by veteran songwriter and bandleader Hitchcock (his solo discography gets pretty foggy), The Man Upstairs is his finest new work in five years if not a decade. Hitchcock is sometimes dismissed as an eccentric humorist, but songs like San Francisco Patrol are testimony to his way with spine-tingling poignancy and beauty. For my money, this is his most gorgeous song since I Don't Remember Guildford first appeared on record in 1998. Hitchcock mentions several street names that I've walked more than once over the years and that host many memories for me; this helps with the song's personal resonance for me, but you don't need that to see its wonder.   2
