So, this jam comes with a whole back-story. Barely a teenager at the time, Lolita Shante Gooden hooked up with neighbour Marley Marl to produce this freestyled response to a record by Hip-Hop crew U.T.F.O. called 'Roxanne, Roxanne' and in doing so became the first famous female rapper, although she's now largely forgotten. This led to a whole series of response records that became known as the 'Roxanne wars'. A fascinating episode in Hip-Hop's early years, it set the tone for many a battle record in the future.
