I've Gotta Be Me by Sammy Davis, Jr.

“This is my first #AutobiographyMix entry and, thinking about it, there are a lot of songs that have shaped me outside of the ones I've self-selected. Very tangible things that pin a person, moment or place right into my mind. That's the power of music putting it up there with those smells that transport your right back to a specific time. To me that's important as I think I've been shaped more than having done the shaping. So this mix is about that. This particular is a song I neither own or listen to really. Instead throughout my childhood my Dad would randomly sing out the chorus in a faux-lounge way and all that registered was that it was a funny thing that he did. The fact is I didn't even know it was a Sammy Davis song until I heard the chorus driving with my brother at night near a waterpark when I was 18. We were blown away and I still can't explain its hold on my Dad. That mystery (why this and not that) is important I've found. Music is a rabbithole. I entered here.”
